Ride to Tags in Coolidge on December 29

 

Eleven bikes carrying 14 riders assembled at the Chevron today on the coldest day so far for this season.  Cold for us in the Valley of the Sun is 39 degrees when some snowbirds traveling towards us are seeing 30" of snow in New Mexico!  Gary and Ann Hewitt were the leaders, with Derek Hudson our stalwart taildragger.  The destination and the route were carefully chosen to limit exposure.  We rode Ironwood Drive and its extensions to the Hunt Highway where speeds are lower and there might be an occasional stop light.  Well, thanks to flawless leading, all the signal lights were green; a new record!  Hunt Highway is undergoing widening as traffic increases; we can either marvel or complain about the variety of road surfaces we travel on our trip.

 

Soon we're at Tag's, where the Angels have been more often than any other.  It's cozy there, the service and food are both good and homey.  The place is always filled with local cheery faces enjoying their meals.  Today's pictures show that we enjoyed it too.  As our group filtered outside, we talked with a cheery fellow who told us he had no less than 3 Harleys of different configurations, but more importantly is an owner of Tags.  Some Angels may remember his name, and I think his wife is Janis on our restaurant call list. He is the person with the cowboy hat with Dennis & Phil in the pictures.

 

The return trip was via the Cactus Forest Road and the 79 to Florence and home.  A strong East wind reminded us that there is winter everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, including snow on Coronado near Tucson.  Our trip today was 84 miles in 2 + hours lapsed time at average speed 40 mph.  The first ride of the New Year will take place Wednesday to the Big House in Casa Grande.

With this last ride in 2018, we can reflect on good places where we've been, but most of all on the great fellowship Blues Angels represents to all who take part.  We look forward to more of the same in 2019.   HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Ride to Dennys at Fountain Hills

13 Bikes with 16 riders gathered at the station on a cool morning Wednesday. We headed to Fountain Hills with Gerry Hewitt leading and Derek Hudson on the tail. Gerry took a different, more scenic route to the Bush Highway, going north on Idaho Rd to Lost Dutchman Blvd, which turned in to Brown Rd, then on to Ellsworth Rd. We saw 1 wild horse  on the way to Hwy 87. We had called Dennys to let them know we were coming, but had to wait while the staff set up the tables for us. We soon had got coffee to warm our cold hands! After our meal, we came back on the 202, arriving back to GV with 70 miles on the trip meter.

Its supposed to be in the 30's Saturday morning, so it will be another shorter ride to Tag's in Coolidge.
