Phil's Writeup of ride

Just got back from Hawaii, glad to be home. I am sending this out to my Blue's Angels list, I see Paul used an older list, so some may not have got it.
We will follow the "Shelter in Place" rule, so no rides planned going forward.

Nine bikes with thirteen riders gathered at the Chevron for what may
have been the last organized ride of the 2019-20 Season.  Under the
cloud of the COVID-19 regulations, several riders wanted to enjoy one
final trip on some of our familiar mountain roads, having breakfast at
home before a 9:00 AM start.  Phil had discovered that Governor
Ducey's Declaration closing restaurants and bars was for 6 counties
with coronavirus cases, not including Gila County, which is the
Roosevelt Lake area.  The group chose unrestricted Ma's Kitchen as the
stop for meal or coffee, and arrangements were made.  Vern took charge
of organizing and leading the ride with Jay as the tail dragger.

This was the perfect Arizona spring day we've all been wishing for.
Soon we were underway, passing the vacant Renaissance grounds and
onward in sparse traffic.  Today we saw the ever present Mustard
blooms filled with bees; perhaps the hillsides covered with poppies
are yet to come.  Turning left toward Roosevelt Lake from the 60,
there seemed few people around.  At Ma's only two EMT's were eating
breakfast, and the sign said they would close at noon.  The riders
observed social distancing as a group, but it's difficult during the
meal.  They were glad to have us, the meal was generous and served
quickly as usual.

Vern turned right from the Kitchen to follow the lake, now above 85%
filled, to the usual stop for fuel at the Tonto Grocery, where we
first realized many people were getting gas and groceries while
keeping their distance.  It was on the Beeline that we discovered
heavy traffic and literally thousands of people spreading out with
campers and ATV's at every turnout.  The word is out - the desert is a
safe playground where space and safety allow more normal activity on a
spring day.  It was amazing to see such activity with social
distancing, and all those  people will have enjoyed respite from their
cares during these dangerous times.

Despite the warnings to Remain in Place, about half today's riders
expect to leave for their Northern homes within the next 3 days.  We
wish them a safe journey and a good summer, hoping to see everyone
next fall.

There will be small group rides for those staying as spring
continues-stay in touch.  Today's ride was 174 miles in 3.5 hours
lapsed time averaging 53 mph.

Hello Duane + all Blues Angels,

I would like to thank the members of Blues Angels for coming out to the car show at the Resort RV park.  We all enjoyed a great breakfast together followed by a walk down memory lane as we looked at all the old, beautiful restored cars and hot rods.

Unfortunately, Claire and I found out the next day that we had to leave for home immediately due to the Corona virus pandemic declaration being a national emergency.  Our medical insurance company gave us 10 days to get back to Canada (deadline - March23, 2020) after which our coverage would be cancelled. (Apparently, they do not cover pandemics)

We are presently in Sutherlin, OR, 500 miles from our home in Surrey, BC.  We should cross the border on Sunday and then be self quarantined for two weeks.  Every day on the road the traffic gets thinner.  The Can/US Border has been closed except for essential travel and returning citizens.  We will not be allowed back into the USA for the foreseeable future.

I just wanted to thank Duane, our leader and all the Blues Angels for another great season of riding and camaraderie.  I hope and pray that a cure is found for this Covid - 19 - virus.  Until next season, try to enjoy what will now be the new normal and hopefully, the old normal will be back by next fall.

Ride safe, Derek Hudson

We may have to reconsider that place on our list of restaurants.
We headed out up 177 back toward Winkleman, noticing the abundance of yellow flowers along the roadsides. After a stop at the Shell station for fuel, we headed up the highway toward Globe. We also stopped at the overlook at the top, which is named El Capitan Pass. The plaque told us that Kearney's Army of the West passed thru here in 1846, with Kit Carson as the scout! We continued thru Globe, with the temperature rising as we descended into the valley. We arrived back at 2:45, having ridden 189 miles.
Wednesdays destination is to Payson, but the weather guessers are saying rain, so we'll see. Starting Saturday, the 14th, we will change to 8 AM starts, with our ride to Mt Lemmon.  We will also have an alternate for that day, for those who prefer a shorter ride. Derek Hudson's park has a car show from 8-12, with breakfast served ( eggs, ham or sausage, toast or pancakes, coffee, juice for $5 ) It is located at 1101 S Ellsworth Rd & Southern Av. Then a ride destination could be determined. Also, I have had several inquiries about going on the Rim Ride. That is scheduled for the 18th.

Ride to Maria's at Winkelman on March 14

Seven bikes with 8 riders departed the Chevron shortly after 8:00 this morning on the "official" ride.  There had been plans for Mt. Lemmon near Tucson, but it's snow-covered and cold. Instead we chose one of the favorites, Maria's at Winkelman.   Another smaller group set out for breakfast and a Car Show at The Resort at the invitation of Derek Hudson.  Before the departures, Al Jeanquart did a land-office business selling tickets and pins prior to next Saturday's Blue's Angels Picnic.  Our speakers on Saturday March 21 work with the wild horses that we often see near the Salt River, and the event starts at 11:30 with the meal at 12:00.  Part of the fun will include a ticket raffle for many items, with the prize item being a Motorcycle Blanket filled with decals.  It's that time of year, and you should have your meal ticket now, or talk to Mini-Al immediately.  Sorry, no pictures today.

Bob Shinnick was our leader today, with Bill Lieser at the tail.  There was radio talk about the effect of the Coronavirus on events, but the crowd at the Renaissance Festival seemed bigger than ever as we returned on the 60.  Again we had a beautiful day after all the rain as we traced the Copper Canyon Trail from Superior to Winkelman, then from there to Globe after the meal.  We passed a large group of bicyclists were on their way to the Winkelman Park and Campground.  The meal at Maria's was as tasty as ever, and the riders enjoyed casual respite around the table.  There was cool air and lots of flowers along the way to Globe, where our leader reported the elevation is just a few feet short of 5,000.  There is a marvelous change to green foliage on the desert since we went through only a week before.  A quick stop at Globe including some $2.34 gas, and it was a smooth trip home.

Today's trip was 150 miles in 3 hours 8 minutes elapsed time for an average speed of 48 mph.  Today was the last AZ ride of the season for Bob Keeler and Bill Lieser. With warm weather and the Coronavirus emergency, more will soon be leaving.  Our fearless Leader Duane will be in Hawaii next week.

The Rim Ride is planned for next Wednesday, March 18 starting at 8:00 AM.  Rain is again predicted.  See what happens.

Picnic Saturday, March 21st

I am getting many inquiries about the picnic. It will be the same as previous years, in the Apache Room, starting at 11:30 AM. Food will be served at 12, with a program and raffle following. Al Jeanquart will be selling tickets at the station on Saturday, March 14th at 8 AM.

Update

No ride yesterday because of the rain. Weatherman Vern says snow predicted for Mt Lemmon  today & tomorrow, high of 39 degrees on Saturday. So will have to choose a different ride destination. Several have indicated they will go to Derek Hudson's park for there car show and breakfast.  Remember, we start at 8 AM going forward! You need to get your picnic tickets purchased by this weekend.
