WEDNESDAY'S RIDE STARTS AT 9:00 AM!

The shadows were long in the winter sun as the six bikes with lone passenger Mary assembled for the ride planned to Pine.  Returning riders today were Peter Vander Werff and Gary Knudson.  Our leader was Dennis, with Paul at the tail as usual.

It's 96 miles to the Early Bird café at Pine, and in that distance the terrain changes from Sonoran desert to the high mountains, where there are large burn areas,  and then to the Mogollon Ridge where pine trees cover the whole area.  When we arrived at the café, we noticed there were many people standing around outside.  There had been plenty of highway travelers, and this was one of the destinations.   The Early Bird had whole groups of people waiting to be served; a situation that has never happened before at that place. I even forgot to take a picture.  So, there wasn't a lot to do but move on.  Instead we went back to the 260 Cafe at Payson, where there were plenty of customers, but the service and the food are both very good.  Our first stop for $3.39 gasoline in Payson was thwarted by empty pumps, and there are lots of people  going home tomorrow!

We decided to drive the 188 around Roosevelt lake in the brilliant and pleasant sunshine.  Our stop at the Roosevelt Lake Bridge perfectly frames the bikes lined up in the picture. It brought up lots of memories of past rides, and talk about the level of the lake. Today it is 68% of capacity and had been higher after the monsoons.  Our trip today was 240 miles with a 2:20 return to Golden Vista after 4:45 hours on the road at average 50.4 mph. It was a really special day.

Wednesday's ride will be to Casa Grande and the Cracker Barrel.  IT'S DECEMBER 1, SO THE START TIME CHANGES TO 9:00 AM.

Fwd: FW: Ride to the Copper Hen

Another bright and sunny November day greeted the Angels as we gathered at the station for the trip to the Copper Hen at Globe.  As we rode East from Superior, the slowly rising sun touched the tops of the hoodoos, reminding us that it is nearly winter season in Arizona as well as everywhere else.

There were nine bikes with 14 riders today, and our leader was Dan Knorr with Paul B. on the tail. Traffic on the highway near Miami was delayed by yet another guardrail project, but I noticed that the bridge project near the Bluebird mine has been finished except for the approaches.

The Copper Hen is located well into the Globe business district, and is a new enterprise to me. There were plenty of customers, and we enjoyed really good food, although we were there almost 2 hours. Two couples went directly back on the 60, while the rest turned east then south to Winkelman on Highway 77. There is a great deal of fire damage along that route. It does not diminish the huge geological features even more noticeable with reduced foliage as we glide for miles down the 7% grade nearly all the way to Winkelman. There were a couple of huge transport rigs that kept our speed down as we climbed the grade and settled in for the long downhill ride.

After the stop for R&R, that trip Home was uneventful, and we returned to GV about 1:15 with 150 miles.

We wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving. Although there is no Thanksgiving dinner in the Ballroom, everyone seems to have plans for the holiday tomorrow.  The ride on Saturday will be to Pine, northeast of Payson. We can expect some cooler weather, although it will be pleasant by comparison to most parts of the country.

Yesterday Paul, Jim and I explored the Freeman Trail, a 33-mile gravel road from about 5 miles south of the Tom Mix to Dudleyville, about 7  miles south of Winkelman on the 77.  The desert terrain has a couple notable mountain peaks, a few outpost cattle ranches and lots of desert grass and foliage. The  twisting dusty road is easy traveling except for one place: there is a Missouri Bridge creek crossing with a gravel bottom  just before Dudleyville that would be bad news for motorcycles.  The town is an end-of-the-road place where several houses burned in a forest fire last year.

There is also a photo of empty and collapsed storefronts in downtown Hayden where the only active business is the Police Department with no less than 5 patrol cars parked in front.  They must be carefully watching the old smelter that made the town and is now watching it close down along with the mining.

Fwd: Ride to Gila Bend on November 17

There were 10 bikes with about 14 riders assembled at the Chevron for the ride in several directions today.  There are more returning riders each week, including me.

Three couples planned a trip to Casa grande for breakfast, one couple went to see the Park Link, and the main group headed for Gila Bend. For me, it was a real pleasure to be riding in the group again.

The Gila Bend group joined a lot of other travelers and trucks on the 202, then to the 10 to Maricopa. This morning the temperature on the desert was at least 5° lower than in town, so winter gloves were quickly in order. We had an enjoyable trip across the desert on our way to the Space Needle restaurant. We were served quickly and discovered prices there are better than expected. Dan has his partner in the photo by the door.

The best part of going to Gila Bend is Highway 85 traveling north across the iron bridge and through the irrigated fields. There are so many different things to observe along the way; from solar panels to unusually green fields.  We stopped at the bridge to ponder the time when their dam failed.  On the road again, we met a 12 foot seeder on a John Deere tractor coming across the 18 foot wide bridge. It caused a pretty quick traffic jam. When we got north to the Shell station, then I suggested that we do Buckeye Road across to the 202.  Again, there are so many new buildings and so much of history to see in buckeye and along the way. The speed picked up quickly on the new 202, so we made fast time across the south metro area. We arrived home about 2:00 with 217 miles; used up our gas and stopped for more at $3.79 a gallon!

November is the best month of the year here with temperatures in the 70s and 80s and very little rain. The green foliage is wonderful to see after last spring's dry season.  We enjoyed!

Sat ride

Hello angels Saturday ride will be a long ride around the rim as we call it. Those who don't want to go that far can do a shorter ride to Payson. Will decide where at the Station.

Sat. 11/6/21

It was good to see more of you. Welcome back home to Duane and Bonnie, Al and Ardis, Mary Russell. There were 7 bikes and 4 lady Angels. They told me they were going to Globe / Apache Gold Casino. I was told the food was good. After a good breakfast, the group spilt up. With three bikes and two lady angels returning home straight away. The other four bikes and two lady angels upped to around Roosevelt lake ( I think). The small group traveled 120 miles.
Phil Parsons informed me of Eugene The man who helps keep some of our Spyers running. Lost His wife of the Covid after a 5-week stay in a hospital. Phil and I will miss Nov.20 ride, for we will attend the memorial for her at 10 AM.
Ride safe.
