Subject: Payson is a cool place

Six riders gathered today at the Chevron to search for cool weather. To all of us, that means Payson and the Airporter CafĂ©..  Dennis McKinney led us on a fast trip, and we were at the Payson airport in quick time. There are two very striking overlooks in our area; one is on the Bush Highway coming toward Rye from the south on the Bush highway.  The other is when you top the grade going toward Winkelman. There were lots of hikers, three groups of wild horses sighted, and plenty of traffic today. Maybe extending the season in spring is a good plan when we hear Minnesota temps today were in the 30's.

The airport waitresses were quick to seat us and serve us.  We had plenty of discussion, including our return trip which was on the 188 past Roosevelt lake, which is still rising by observing the water in the bush at its northern end. We went over to the rest stop for a look at the dam, and a chance to stretch our legs. By that time, the wind had risen, and temperatures were starting to climb. Our last few miles from the Globe intersection to Golden Vista were in strong gusty winds, taking fuel like crazy. It became necessary for most to refill at the Circle K in Superior.

Because we had a stop along the way, today's trip was 210 miles, and we arrived shortly after 1 PM. We'll look for other places that are cool, and there will be an enjoyable ride at 8 AM on Saturday.  Sunny Side Up at Catalina has been suggested.

Phil

PS:  Today I tried a new hot weather shirt to which you add water.  It worked well for the remaining 2 hours after Roosevelt Lake.

Six bikes and riders gathered at the station this morning for the planned trip to Maricopa.  Jay took the lead, and Dennis took the tail position.  Dennis Fitzgerald, a new rider from another AJ park joined us, and Carrol Johnson re-joined the group after being out for some repair on his bike.

The plan to eat at Ak Chin Casino was waylaid by a short staff and an inept hostess. After waiting 3/4 hour, it turned out she was accepting couples and not merging tables. We marked Ak Chin off our list and headed back to the Headquarters Restaurant near the tracks and below the new viaduct in Maricopa. We've been there before.  Some may recall that the Headquarters is a pine paneled place for the locals that has always been filled with customers. No more-it's now off the beaten path with plenty of room and lots of good service. We enjoyed the booth in the corner like old times.

After a good meal and plenty of iced tea or coffee, we took the direct road from Maricopa to Casa Grande where we made a left and out of town towards the north. We passed Coolidge on Number 85 and made a rest/fuel stop at Florence.

We were home after 1 PM with 140 miles traveled on a beautiful 85° day in the valley.  No plan was set for next Wednesday; I'd vote for Payson airport.

Six riders met at the Chevron for a cooler ride today, heading northeast on the Beeline through the mountains, then down the 88 along Roosevelt Lake.  Dennis was our leader, and Paul took up the rear.

Being a late arrival, this was my first pass through the vast area of range fire surrounding the Beeline and over the mountains to Tonto  Valley.   I was appalled at the huge loss of all vegetation, especially the saguaros.  Others tell me there were several different fires, but all took place during last summer's fire season.

Roosevelt lake had a healthy fill of water, and there was a 'Minnesota walleye chop' on the surface as we approached  from the north.  Ma's kitchen was a cool shaded place from the bright sun for the ever present breakfast that we all have enjoyed there.

We returned via the 60, where Dennis, Paul and Max took the 77 to Winkelman while the rest of us returned to GV by 12:15 with 178 miles on a beautiful day.

The ride on Saturday will be to Maricopa and the AK Chin, and points beyond.

Five riders were left in the Blue's Angels lineup at the Chevron this morning. Today is Dan's last ride for the season, and he was given his choice destination:  Eloy airport to watch the skydivers. It was one of those perfect days, and we were given a special treat as a group of 42 skydivers assembled to form a "star" as they descended.

We entered a different world as we mingled; people packing chutes and rushing past in batwing outfits to meet their groups.  There were many flights, and divers constantly coming in on the tarmac. We had Dennis to tell us what they were doing, and soon 2 planes left with about 25 divers in each.  They climbed to about 13,000 ft, discharging their group, which formed their star maneuvers in less than 90 seconds of freefall.  In a short time it was over and the airborne arrived right before us!

The Angels turned South past Picacho Peak, which had a few yellow flowers on its slopes.  We rode across the Park Link Road where the Saguaros and Chollo plants are turning dark from the drought, and were home by 1:00 PM.  What a wonderful day in AZ!  Our trip was 170 miles in 3:20 hours lapsed time @ average 52 mph.

The ride  next Wednesday will be to Ma's kitchen along the shores of Roosevelt lake, where we will find the lake near capacity.  Have a great weekend wherever you are.

The first photo is of the more limited group that now rides as blue blues angels. Because I wasn't able to ride on Wednesday, Paul and I agreed on a ride on the Florence-Kelvin Road from Hiway 79 to Kelvin at the Ray Mine.  Half the 40 mile trip is on gravel, but we enjoyed it anyway and had a meal at Marias number two after we returned.

Five bikes with six riders left the station this morning at 8 AM with Dan in charge.  Our goal today was a new place; the OreCart/Hilltop restaurant at  Oracle.  It has a classic western motif where we could eat outside in the shade at steel tables!

At the beginning, temperatures were mild and because we wanted to join forces, the first group rode to Globe and down the 77 to Winkelman where we met Dennis, Jim and Gary, then to Oracle. We were joined by three more bikes and a total of 11 riders when we joined forces at Winkelman. On the 60, we were passed in a flash by a crotch rocket riding possibly double the posted speed. He went south, which made life easier for the patrolman waiting past the intersection. Going south from Globe, a good sized semi suddenly displayed a cloud of brake smoke after riding the brakes too much in the high country.

After we finished a pleasant meal, the bikes floated without effort as we rode southwest toward the 79, where we turned North toward Florence and home as the temperature was rising.  "It's a dry heat" as thermometers reached 94 degrees,  but warmer readings are coming.

Each time there are less seasonal riders.  The ride on Wednesday begins at 8:00 AM, and is currently programmed to go to Pine, where the temperatures should be cooler. We returned before 2 PM from today's ride of 205 miles at average speed 40 with five hours and 24 minutes riding time.

HAPPY EASTER!        Phil Parsons
