Five bikes with six riders left the station this morning at 8 AM with Dan in charge. Our goal today was a new place; the OreCart/Hilltop restaurant at Oracle. It has a classic western motif where we could eat outside in the shade at steel tables!
At the beginning, temperatures were mild and because we wanted to join forces, the first group rode to Globe and down the 77 to Winkelman where we met Dennis, Jim and Gary, then to Oracle. We were joined by three more bikes and a total of 11 riders when we joined forces at Winkelman. On the 60, we were passed in a flash by a crotch rocket riding possibly double the posted speed. He went south, which made life easier for the patrolman waiting past the intersection. Going south from Globe, a good sized semi suddenly displayed a cloud of brake smoke after riding the brakes too much in the high country.
After we finished a pleasant meal, the bikes floated without effort as we rode southwest toward the 79, where we turned North toward Florence and home as the temperature was rising. "It's a dry heat" as thermometers reached 94 degrees, but warmer readings are coming.
Each time there are less seasonal riders. The ride on Wednesday begins at 8:00 AM, and is currently programmed to go to Pine, where the temperatures should be cooler. We returned before 2 PM from today's ride of 205 miles at average speed 40 with five hours and 24 minutes riding time.
