Hey Vern, thanks for the wishes aye. We are doing pretty good up here. Yes, I sure missed being down there in AZ and riding with a bunch of great people. My friend down there finally sold my bike there, so now I guess I'm buggered. Stay safe and keep the rubber down.

was no surprise.  We had formed a goal to see the terrain along the
288 going to Young, and this was the day.  Indeed, the ride to Young
is one of those places where you can be alone anytime!  There seemed
to be plenty of traffic going east on the 60, but it thinned out
quickly when we turned north toward Roosevelt Lake.



You just get a look at the beauty of nearly-full Roosevelt Lake, then
take the right on 288, where it is 47 miles to the elusive town of
Young, a town of about 600 people in the middle of forested mountains.
Not many people go to Young because the twisting mountain road
consists of 9 miles of highway, then about 16 miles of thin unmarked
blacktop, then the rest is gravel, including another 25 mile stretch
going north that connects to the 260 between Payson and Heber.  We
didn't do it all; our goal was the first 25  miles of hard-surface
that ended just before Sawmill Flats, where we ate the lunch we
brought with us.  That was the place where 3,000,000 bd ft of lumber
for building Roosevelt Dam came from. The scenery is awesome!  As you
drop to the Salt River bridge where we have been to the  little
retention dam before, Roosevelt Lake appears occasionally.  Soon there
are huge cliffs and canyons with hairpin turns.  There was a very
talented road grader operator cutting ditches along the blacktop.  You
may have heard the term "Desert to Pineland" in AZ descriptions, and
it's all true on this stretch of road.  The first 25 miles offers hard
surface riding, where we returned the way we came after our rest stop.
We resolved to make a full round trip with Irv's Jeep next fall.

Wed 4/1/20

Well three trikes and five riders met at the station for a very nice
day to ride. Ther was Jay and Dottie, Irving Valvick, Bobbie B and Me.
Jay lead our little group I was the tail. Guess what with new ear
phones we all talked find . S it was my head set all winter that was
wrong. We headed East to the 79 cut off, with 10 min. break at Tom Mix
rest area. ( Two other Bikes stopped there too. We then heads on to
Park Link road and then west/north to the Shell station for Fuel and a
snack. 81 octaine was only 2.19 a gallon. There we headed on threw
Coolidge to Ironwood and home. It was 3 hours and 40 min. and about
140 miles.
There were about 4 bikes and 6 or 7 rider left as I got bto the
station, Jay said they were riding The rim. that all I know about that
ride.
Tell next time Be safe so I'll see all your smiling faces.

Just got back from Hawaii, glad to be home. I am sending this out to my Blue's Angels list, I see Paul used an older list, so some may not have got it.

Nine bikes with thirteen riders gathered at the Chevron for what may

have been the last organized ride of the 2019-20 Season.  Under the

cloud of the COVID-19 regulations, several riders wanted to enjoy one

final trip on some of our familiar mountain roads, having breakfast at

home before a 9:00 AM start.  Phil had discovered that Governor

Ducey's Declaration closing restaurants and bars was for 6 counties

with coronavirus cases, not including Gila County, which is the

Roosevelt Lake area.  The group chose unrestricted Ma's Kitchen as the

stop for meal or coffee, and arrangements were made.  Vern took charge

of organizing and leading the ride with Jay as the tail dragger.

This was the perfect Arizona spring day we've all been wishing for.

Soon we were underway, passing the vacant Renaissance grounds and

onward in sparse traffic.  Today we saw the ever present Mustard

blooms filled with bees; perhaps the hillsides covered with poppies

are yet to come.  Turning left toward Roosevelt Lake from the 60,

there seemed few people around.  At Ma's only two EMT's were eating

breakfast, and the sign said they would close at noon.  The riders

observed social distancing as a group, but it's difficult during the

meal.  They were glad to have us, the meal was generous and served

quickly as usual.

Vern turned right from the Kitchen to follow the lake, now above 85%

filled, to the usual stop for fuel at the Tonto Grocery, where we

first realized many people were getting gas and groceries while

keeping their distance.  It was on the Beeline that we discovered

heavy traffic and literally thousands of people spreading out with

campers and ATV's at every turnout.  The word is out - the desert is a

safe playground where space and safety allow more normal activity on a

spring day.  It was amazing to see such activity with social

distancing, and all those  people will have enjoyed respite from their

cares during these dangerous times.

Despite the warnings to Remain in Place, about half today's riders

expect to leave for their Northern homes within the next 3 days.  We

wish them a safe journey and a good summer, hoping to see everyone

next fall.

There will be small group rides for those staying as spring

continues-stay in touch.  Today's ride was 174 miles in 3.5 hours

lapsed time averaging 53 mph.
