The blues Angels ride swelled to nine bikes today in mid May with the addition of Eugene Beran and his wife Laurel with their friend Gary, along with a few others from outside the park. Dennis was our leader, with Jay at the tail as we have been usual lately.
Long cool shadows shaded the way as we passed through the mountains from Superior to Globe, then turned left on the 188 to Lake Roosevelt. Starting down the long slope to Lake Roosevelt is one of those most striking views, and the lake is doing very well this year at 77% of capacity. Our target was Ma's kitchen, a well known restaurant for our group. Some of our new riders did not know it was there. As usual, portions were large and the service was good as we enjoyed respite from the rising temperatures outside. Our next stop was the Roosevelt Lake Bridge, where we stopped for these beautiful pictures of our surroundings. Working north through the Tonto Valley, we were pleased and impressed to see some new grasses and bushes sprouting in the large burn area along the two roads we travel. With no moisture, we were surprised to see the light green cover overtaking the burned appearance that was there only 10 days ago. We were also impressed to see the large number of RV's camped along the beach in the north part of the Roosevelt lake area. There were few campers in the southern areas where Ramadas have been built for camping in the desert areas away from the beach.
Parking areas in the Salt River Canyon area along the Bush Highway were filled to capacity with river floaters and hikers along the river on this, another warm and sunny day. We returned to GV with 180 miles in 3.22 hours at average speed 53 mph. The ride on Wednesday will be the last for more of our members, and we will be at Europa Pizza in Fountain Hills to watch the display.
